Day three of Rewired covered plenty of key topics – from challenging cloud regulators and connected care principles to mobile health records and technology in Integrated Care Systems (ICS). Here is a roundup of Wednesday’s highlights.

The mornings sessions on 17 March were split into the Cloud and Mobile and Connected Care Summits where delegates heard from Andy Callow, group chief digital information officer at Kettering General Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, and Lee Rickles, director of the Yorkshire and Humber Care Record Programme.

Callow called on CIOs to band together and challenge regulators on the capital/revenue issues which can block progress, adding that they should “hold their nerve”.

While Rickles said having a set of principles to follow is “absolutely key” when it comes to connected care.

Over lunch, Peppy Health, an app that connects people going through challenging stages such as menopause and parenthood, won heat 3 of the Rewired Pitchfest.

They will join Concentric Health and MediShout in the live final on Friday (March 19).

Then in the afternoon, we had the Virtual Care and Clinical Software Summits with speakers including Professor Joe Harrison, CEO of Milton Keynes Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and Kate Walker, digital programme director at Suffolk and North East Essex Integrated Care System.

Prof Harrison’s keynote centred the work he and his team have done with Apple to give patients mobile access to their patient record, adding that a main driver to the project was to “empower the patient”.

Over on clinical software, Walker spoke of the four major barriers to technology the ICS had come up against: silos, capacity and capability, misaligned lever and penalties, and tribalism and protectionism.

She added there are two key drivers that will unlock the benefits of digital, data and technology in an ICS – the maturity of infrastructure and the maturity of the ability to transform.

Digital Health Rewired 2021 is running from 15-19 March and is free for everyone from NHS, public sector, independent providers, charities and education sectors, plus start-ups less than three-years old.
